I was recommended Writing the Breakout Novel by a freelance editor I interviewed in October of 2019. I told her that I was looking to improve my writing and storytelling, and she recommended it to me (along with two others). Having finished the book not long ago, I can’t speak highly enough about it.
Whether you’re an aspiring author or a seasoned novelists, Writing the Breakout Novel shines several lights on key story components that we as writers would do well to remember. At the end of this post is my video recap of the first chapter, Premise. In Premise, the four key ingredients to a breakout premise are detailed and I must say I was impressed.
- Plausibility
- Inherent Conflict
- Originality
- Gut Emotional Appeal
The chapter had me buzzing with excitement. I’m a full picture kind of writer. I like to know all the ins and outs of my story before I begin to write it out. Basically, I’m a hardcore “plotter”.
In my video, I cite examples Maass (the author) gives for each ingredient and give a few thoughts and tips myself. Check it out below and tell me what you think!
